Who Am I?
My name is Des O’Connor, and I used to be exactly where you are now.
From 1998 to 2014, I was the proud owner of Des O’Connor’s Driving School in London. I worked as a driving instructor for 16 years and built one of the city’s most successful multi-instructor schools, with around 15 ADIs and 8 PDIs on my team.
During that time, I was featured on Richard & Judy (twice), BBC One’s The One Show, and a driving school documentary. We also appeared on Comic Relief’s Celebrity Driving School, where my team taught Gareth Gates to drive.
In 2011 I partnered with the Driving Instructors Association (DIA) and the Driving Standards Agency (DSA, now DVSA) to run one of the UK’s first business and marketing seminars for driving instructors at the Thistle Hotel in Westminster.
Alongside Steve Garrod from the DIA and Mike Frisby from the DSA, we helped hundreds of ADIs learn how to grow their income and build stronger, more successful businesses. I understood the same challenges, working long hours, managing enquiries, and building something real from the ground up.

Back when most instructors relied on Yellow Pages and word of mouth, I decided to do things differently.
I built one of the first websites for a driving school, DesOConnors.com, and even placed the domain name on top of my car, right above my mobile number, turning it into a moving advert.
That one small idea helped me stand out and attract more pupils while others were still waiting for referrals.
Eventually, every driving school had a website. Then came Facebook, followed by Instagram, Snapchat, and later TikTok. Suddenly, instructors everywhere were competing for attention online, each trying to stand out in a crowded space.
But now the world is changing again.
AI is already shaping how you appear on Google, how your posts perform on social media, and how easily new pupils find you online.

When I left the driving instructor industry...
When I left the driving instructor industry, I became an international speaker specialising in branding, business, and marketing.
I went on to become recognised as one of the UK’s leading consultants for helping both women and men become confident business leaders and public speakers.
I hosted sold-out empowerment events across the country, supporting thousands of professionals to grow their brands, speak on stage, and turn their knowledge into income.
These events were filled with driving instructors, coaches, and entrepreneurs who wanted to step up, build something meaningful, and create real success.
In November 2024, I launched DesOConnor AI, my own AI consultancy brand, in front of an audience of more than 250 attendees and 20 guest speakers. It marked the start of a new chapter, combining everything I’ve learned about business growth, marketing, and personal development to help professionals thrive in the age of AI.
After the success of that event, I realised it was time to return to the industry where my journey first began. The driving instructor world had changed dramatically since I left, but one thing remained the same. Many instructors were still working hard without the right business or marketing support.
That’s when I decided to create AI for Driving Instructors, a platform designed to give every ADI the tools, training, and confidence to grow their business using the power of AI. My goal was simple: to make AI easy to understand, affordable to use, and powerful enough to transform the way instructors live and work.
